Restore compatibility with python 3.4.

The upstream commit 9c873579348e3308123d broke python versions
3.4 and below. We would like to support an ubuntu 20.04 client
(python 3.8) connecting to a ubuntu 14.04 server (python 3.4).

The change here makes that combination work.
