some improvements, fewer subshells

no more subshells, use 'setf' to control setting of 'set -f'.
This allows us to restore it to its previous setting.

Also
 * bug fix here for determining if the rootmnt is writable.
 * bug fix with incorrect logic on mounting rw
 * pass arguments (rootmnt) into apply_updateroot
