I thought we had missed the deadline for changes? If not, we should deal with "Gwibber" being touted as "new" in 13.04, but Hannie said it has been removed in 13.04.

There seems to be a lot I still do not understand about this process:

Why does, for example, the french po file seemingly change to older versions of stuff? 2011 Verses 2013, in the first few lines of the diff.

Why do most of the .po files (for two updates now) still show as "needs review" in the import gueue? ( https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu-docs/+imports )

Why is the translations status web page so utterly useless, not showing the actual last change date?
( https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu-docs/raring/+translations ) We know the .po files were all changed since 2013.04.07.

Even though the .po files needed to be updated, why did all, or most anyhow, mentions of 12.10 change anyhow to 13.04, albeit sometimes untranslated?

There is no change there, only import of the current translations exported from launchpad

because we are releasing 13.04? the mention of 12.10 were outdated buggy strings (those should have dropped off thursday when the template got updated)

that's a side effect of the template update last week:
- 13.04.1: the template was not updated, translated pages were still using the 12.10 content and not reflecting the current documentation
- 13.04.2: the template got updated, which has as a side effect of updating the content of the translated pages (and leading to new strings to translate and showing untranslated ones in the UI), see https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-translators/2013-April/005914.html

I realize the import takes times, but over two weeks? That is how long some of the import queue entries have been sitting there. Recently, I did that same thing for the serverguide, and all of those import queue things disappeared within a day or two. (I don't know if by automation or by manual intervention).

I understand the .pot change leads to the .po change stuff which then needs to be re-imported, which is what is being done via this merge proposal. What I still don't understand is how all the 12.10 stuff already changed to 13.04 in every language, before this revision got merged and as shown in the french link I gave.

Could you give exact urls for some of those entries?

In normal conditions translations get automatically imported, but if
those are from a new template or uploaded by somebody who doesn't have
rights they might need manual approving from an admin.

The link you gave is the website, I'm not sure who updates it and how
but if you do a local build you will also have the translations
complete. The delay with the help version is that those are stripped
from builds to be shipped with language packs, that process takes longer
since it requires to go through and import/export cycle.

I suggest you contact "<email address hidden>" about those
questions though, the list will have people that know better the
process and will be more appropriate that this merge request for discussion

where is still shows most of Jeremy's .po file from 2013.04.07 as "Needs Review".

I am doing the help.ubuntu.com this cycle, and learning how to do it at the same time. It is updated automatically from the BZR branch, I think once a day, sometime between when I go to bed and when I get up. It was current as of last night, and I am working now on the update to include the revision of this MP. I had thought the desktop part of it was done, as I thought the deadline for any change (including importing translations, even though I was well aware that had not been imported) was Thursday a few days ago.

The way imports work in Launchpad is that at build time translations (the .pot file and all .po files) are extracted from the package, put together in a tarball and then fed to Launchpad Translations.

This is the point where translations enter the translations imports queue (e.g. [1]). This is what happens after for a package like ubuntu-docs:

1. The .pot file is examined, including format correctness checks
2. If it's correct and it can be matched to an existing template in Ubuntu [2], it is imported, and Launchpad is then updated with the latest translatable messages
3. Once the template is imported, then all its associated .po files are imported too

Where we've got issues sometimes is when a package does not create a .pot file during the build. In that case, the tarball fed to Launchpad only contains the .po file and Launchpad does not know what to do with it. I.e. it knows the source package they belong to, but not the template.

Looking at the imports queue, I don't see any .pot file waiting to be imported, so my hunch is that the .po files from the 04.07. upload were missing a .pot file, so they ended up in the queue and they will never got imported (unless someone manually goes through them one and approves them one by one).

I don't think it's critical that they are not imported, as translations for ubuntu-docs happen exclusively in Launchpad and they are already on the database. The critical part for ubuntu-docs is to make sure the .pot file is kept up to date.
