Revert change from rev 380 to prevent memory leak

Starting around the time rev 380 was introduced, we've been fielding X
crash reports, where the system appears to run into an out-of-memory
condition. (X crashes have generally been due to trying to instantiate
graphics but cmalloc() calls failing and returning NULL, then those
pointers being used unchecked.) So, on the X end we've been fixing
symptoms but not the root cause.

Robert Hooker finds that with this ubiquity commit reverted he is not
able to reproduce the issues.
