Does this also happen with other directories? (say ones with less images in them). To change the directory without starting Inkscape, open your preferences.xml, search for the 'gallery' group and modify the 'directory' attribute
If this proves true, we may have to just blacklist Mac OSX for this dialog and maybe the OCAL one, at least until this GIO stuff gets fixed :/
