JHelioviewer is a viewer for solar images. Conventional image viewers require that the entire image is downloaded before viewing; due to the vast amount of solar imagery in both the number of images and the size of the images, a more effective method of serving the images is required. This will be exacerbated with the new solar mission Solar Dynamics Observatory that will be collecting more than one terabyte of data per day. JPEG2000 technology promises to be the ideal solution. It has the capability to serve data to a client in highly compressed, quality progressive, and region-of-interest based form. These features make it possible to minimize the data transmitted while maximizing the use of the data that is transmitted. In addition to viewing single images, the JHelioviewer can display animations, i.e. JPEG 2000 files that contain time-series of images.
