No, this is not about HiDPI.
This is not either about making the button sizes bigger, but the sensible area bigger.
So, an usability fix more than appearance.
Due that bug #1693609 can't be fixed by making the buttons themselves bigger (this is the design), the experience can improved as it was done in unity already.
