the older clutter unity in 10.10 only shows 1 arrow (even with multiple windows of the same app), that saves space, but does not give the information..
one good solution i believe is what dockbarX gnome applet does to save space: print the Number of open windows/instances. Looks very good too.
something similar could be done. Maybe merge the arrows into one (making it look bigger or "hotter" color) when multiple windows and icon is folded/stacked , etc..
