As a work-around I usually go in one of the virtual console, and kill compiz:
- Ctrl-Alt-F1
- login, then:
$ pkill -9 compiz
- Ctrl-D (logout)
- Ctrl-Alt-F7

This should kill the lock screen, restart compiz. Applications should not be affected.
