search in /boot/grub/menu.lst for the line # kopt= ...
append "i915.modeset=0 " to the line
looks like
# kopt=root=/dev/... ro i915.modeset=0
update-grub
and it will be added in the parameterlist on all kernels into all
version if you make a kernel update

ps it is the 9.10 is the alpha release oft the next LTS, so you will
have many critical bugs in it
