proof-of concept patch v3, with debug code. (need to undo previous patch first, then apply this patch)

Here is the same proof-of-concept patch v3, with debug code. So those
who are interested can observe the behavior of sync.c themselves.
The debug output is in /var/log/gdm/:0.log.
