Thanks everyone for reporting and participating in the development of a fix for this very serious issue. We have a proposed fix document, but are unable to reproduce the error on a broad enough set of test machines, so need feedback from those of you who are affected to confirm that this set of instructions is complete and appropriate:

Please let us know as soon as possible if these address the issue for you. In this case, please DO report if it works, as well as if it does not work, by commenting on this bug.
Note, they assume you are connected to the internet, and if you usually do that by dialup then you will need to set that up from the console. We'll post updated instructions that address that specific case soon.
