An update: Kernel upgrade didn't prevent crashing, it still happens. I also tried the 9639 driver (aka nvidia-glx package) and unfortunately the tv-out doesn't work with that either (seems to have stopped working after the legacy driver).

Maybe I should buy a new video card, it's cheaper than spending hours with this bug.
