This is definitely NOT fixed on Maverick (x86_64):

$ xdg-mime query filetype file.txt
$ export XDG_UTILS_DEBUG_LEVEL=10
$ xdg-mime query filetype file.txt
Running gnomevfs-info "/home/user/file.txt"

There is no gnomevfs-info installed:

$ gnomevfs-info
The program 'gnomevfs-info' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install libgnomevfs2-bin
