At least on nvidia here, it seems like you can check if the operation took effect by quickly running glxgears.

In terms of rendering errors, there are all kinds of rendering errors that could possibly occurr - the most likely is probably tearing in the application due to VSync being turned off in the driver by default. I don't think other rendering errors would really be related to /this/ particular bug, a new bug should be filed for that if its not just tearing.
