I also have this problem with 2 different machines:
1. Newish Dell Vostro 1310. This will not mount any audio CDs with the internal drive or external USB drive. I have tried fiddling around with fstab and grub without success. I have also tried changing the bios setting from ACP to ATA. I I do have a copy of Mint 9 (32bit) running on VMPlayer on this machine which will successfully mount the CD. Here is what happens when I try to mount from the CLI:
~$ sudo mount /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: you must specify the filesystem type

Here is some other info
~$ sudo lshw -C disk

2. Old AMD 1600 system with ATA 33 interface this is running Mint 9 32bit. This will not mount the internal drive but will mount an external USB drive. I will post additional info from that machine.

This REALLY is irritating!
