Sometimes I see the DVD drive, sometimes I don't. When I see the drive, everything works fine until the next boot, including playing movies. I don't know exactly what is making it disappear.
The udev version I have installed is 151-12, Ubuntu 10.04, and here is my dvdrw information, which I only see when my drive is detected: product: DVD+-RW GH50N; vendor: HL-DT-ST.
My workaround is to boot in recovery mode, and then "Proceed with normal boot". It looks like the drive is always detected when I do that. I end up at the terminal prompt. To open gnome, I login and type "startx".
