Thank you for your helpful reply.
I discovered, just yesterday, that the hard disk was on the way out and is now dead. Good thing I'd moved to another machine. I've been able to get Ubuntu installed and working on it and am becoming quite familiar with using it and Linux. I like this new world. It beats Windows in so many ways.
