I can also confirm this on my laptop (Acer TravelMate 4001 WLMi, graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon 9700/64 Mb).

After the fix in /etc/usplash.conf and executing «sudo update-initramfs -u -k `uname -r`» it came back to normal.
