I have the same problem with my Compaq presario V2000 Laptop with AMD/ATI chipset. On boot up the Grub would display and then the screen would go blank. It did nothing after this. By holding ctrl/alt/F3 a command line displayed and the computer booted after this. I then received no login splash screen nor did I get a splash screen on shutdown.
