Hi Colin,
comparing these two values is impossible for me because displayconfig-gtk is not running properly (Bug 178061):
markus@markus-desktop:~$ cat /etc/usplash.conf
# Usplash configuration file
xres=640
yres=480
markus@markus-desktop:~$ displayconfig-gtk
*** Error: couldn't find any ServerLayout sections
markus@markus-desktop:~$

So I'm not sure if this is really related to the problem originally reported here.
