As mentioned, none of the workarounds solved the issue for me on Fiesty or Gutsy and I was left with powersave during boot. Tonight I have downloaded the fresh Hardy Alpha 3 image (alternative 64bit) and done a clean install. I still have the same symptoms - the fix in Hardy does *not* make usplash work on my system.

Hardware details are above (a Dell Inspiron 530 with nVidia GeForce 8600 GT), let me know what I can post that will help nail this one
