Telling us what version you're using would obviously have helped debugging.
Anyway, this kind of behavior is not possible not in Lucid, the new version only changes groups, and will never remove them when creating/modifying an user. It would have been interesting to find out what's going on, but that's kind of obsolete now. If somebody triggers something similar in Lucid, I'm OK to give a look, though.
