sudo speaker-test -t wav -r 48000 worked fine to me.
speaker-test -t wav -r 44100 failed on "Sample rate doesn't match (48000) for /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav"

I hear nothing when running: paplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Side_Left.wav
attached my pulse log.
