I have now gotten my sound to work. I had to:
1) do a clean re-install.
2) install the test file linked to above.
3) rm -r .pulse*
4) kill pulseaudio (pulseaudio -k).
5) restart pulseaudio.

2 - 5 I'm sure you recognize.
