I see the notebook only every other weekend :) and I will try wvdial next time. Right now vodafone-mobile-connect from https://forge.betavine.net/projects/vodafonemobilec/ is used on the notebook instead of the network-manager and DNS works all the time. The vodafone app allows to set DNS manually and I did just that, so may be that's the reason.
