sorry for being silent for so long.
Today I tested openvpn_2.4.6-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb from cosmic with the openvpn@.service from upstream and I get no errors when my clients connect.
If we change the openvpn@.service file in cosmic / bionic according to the upstream file we should have a solution ...
