Dear Scott,
Per your directions in #9 above, mountall~ppa1 is working fine for Lucid 10.04 beta 2 x86_64; however I'm still wondering why the checkdisk utility now desires to run each time boot-up occurs. I will run a memory test to be sure and report back on the results. It would be very strange to see this harddrive (<year old) have any corruption at this stage.
