I think this may be the same bug I found:
sudo dpkg -P matchbox-window-manager
(Reading database ... 399785 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing matchbox-window-manager ...
dpkg (subprocess): unable to execute pre-removal script: Exec format error
dpkg: error processing matchbox-window-manager (--purge):
 subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
 matchbox-window-manager

I edited /var/lib/dpkg/info/matchbox-window-manager.prerm and added the needed "#!/bin/sh" as the top line.

apt-cache policy matchbox-window-manager
