I've been dealing with this IO problem since a LONG time (months).
I've tried kernel 2.6.32-24.39~spcbug543617a and 2.6.32-23.38~lp585092v4. The problem was still there.
I then installed the 2.6.35 kernel that Tim Gardner in #38 shared and now it at last works normally !!!!
Everytime I had IO on the harddrive, it was slowing/freezing my computer. Doing an apt-get upgrade was almost non possible with too much packages. Now with 2.6.35 I see almost no IO wait. I even compiled a version of Firefox for 20 minutes without any lagging, something I could not even think to do before.
