The difference seems to be that the Walkman is treated as an single unpartitioned block now rather than as a device with a partition on it.
I now can see size information in /sys/block/sdc/size where before it was in /sys/block/sdc/sdc1/size, and the size appears to be correct. Running fdisk -l still shows an apparent /dev/sdc1, and this has the invalid size information as before. My assumption, therefore, is that the kernel is now ignoring what I guess isn't a real partition.
Have just installed the generic 2.6.27 kernel from http:// kernel. ubuntu. com/pub/ next/2. 6.27-rc3/ hardy/ and a quick test suggests that things have improved.
