I also tried repartitioning the 828 using cfdisk, but the kernel just doesn't seem to like the apparent geometry of the device. I somehow managed to get it recognised with a single FAT32 partition, though it showed up as 30GB! The walkman itself wouldn't boot with this, so in the end I restored the original disk image.
I get roughly the same output in daemon.log as Benjamin:
