Manually installing the Nvidia driver (.bin) works for me. The only trick is that every single kernel update breaks X, which needs to be fixed by re-running the installer from a console while X isn't running.

If those directions don't work, I suggest reporting a bug to Nvidia or posting over on the Ubuntu forums for help - using the Nvidia driver package is a bit off topic for a bug on Launchpad.
