After all I'd suggest dropping ubuntu in environments with these requirements. Personally I'll go back to Debian. I'll miss the X config stuff that works most of the time for me, but on the other end once I updated my template to deploy with etch or testing again on the boxes I'll be done with. And I can be pretty sure that bugs like these are fixed within a considerable amount of time by debian.
