I will confess, though, I am now more puzzled than ever !
I am a poor old man discovering in his late seventies the niceties of IT
who has unlimited admiration for the expertise of all you geeks. It is
too late now to learn your language.

This bug has been fixed in Debian. Have a look at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=655567
You may use the same fix in your hylafax version.
