This issue is driving me crazy. I tried Setting "apm_battery = 128" in /etc/hdparm.conf and it seemed to work for a while and starts the same issue again. I don't want to keep on trying options for fear of damaging my 1TB HD on my Samsung Chronos 7 laptop, that would be too much.

On the extreme side, this is the kind of thing that makes people shy away from Linux. The problem has been known to be there for a while, so why not fix this imminently important issue, more important than UNITY, my two cents. If I can't use my laptop (which is supposed to give me 5+ hours battery life) on battery mode, what would be the reason for spending so much money on it and so much time on Linux. I say all this, because I Love Linux/Ubuntu and want to use it everyday. So, please fix this or at least tell us what to do so we don't end up damaging our HD. I know Ubuntu comes under 'Absolutely No Warranty ...'

Thank you.
