I see this problem with a fresh Ubuntu server install from about a week ago. Every time I boot, I end up at a blank screen with a blinking cursor, and I have to type ctrl-alt-F1 to get my login prompt. Took me a while the first time to figure out that my install wasn't broken and the boot had actually succeeded.
