Rachel, no need to switch to Mac to avoid this problem. What I ended up
doing was this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
$ sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
$ sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop
