Oh, forgot to respond to your comment about:

The reason not to go with something longer like "Check all file systems (will remount filesystems read/write when finished)" was that screen space is limited and whiptail doesn't seem to wrap properly (text just overflows).
I had to change a few strings to be shorted so they don't mess up the menu (at least on my system), would be nice if we could teach whiptail to properly wrap.
