another workaround is to downgrade file-roller http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/file-roller#pdownload just don't forget to lock the package in synaptic and in dpkg echo "file-roller hold" | sudo dpkg --set-selections
downgrading fixed all the file roller issues for me (crashes and over sized .tar.bz2 files)
