Ups, its been a few days since I reported this one.
By now I have to say that all is back to normal.

Here is what I did: Immediately after startup I switched to the trash. Empty the trash and close evolution. Start Evolution again and immediately switch to trash, then to the inbox.

After that it worked again.

Should I still do what you suggested?
