The root cause is removing the "-remote" option in Firefox 36:

I'm running XFCE and the option is used in /usr/share/xfce4/helpers/firefox.desktop.

Workaround:
replace the last line in /usr/share/xfce4/helpers/firefox.desktop with:
X-XFCE-CommandsWithParameter=%B -new-tab "%s";%B "%s";
