I ran into the same bug on my Thinkpad 440s. Installing http://packages.ubuntu.com/nl/trusty/efibootmgr 0.5.4 from trusty in the live CD environment and adding the boot entry using

efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sda -p 1 -l '\EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi' -L 'ubuntu'

Works. :-) Hope this helps!
