Wanted to confirm on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS same problem, and after following suggestions above and installing Eclipse from Synaptic rather than the Ubuntu Software Center (which I believe also filled in installation for eclipse-jdt and eclipse-pde) helped solve the problem. Thanks for the tips guys!
