For anyone who ended up here while troubleshooting this problem, you can get the debs for karmic from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/libmatthew-java/0.7.2-1ubuntu1 on the right hand side of the page. Installing those on 9.04 is working for me so far. I don't know if that's the correct way to do it, but it's the best I've come up with.
