In case anybody needs to bring DVD+RWs back to life after brasero is done with them, i figured out after much experimentation that the sequence of the following two commands will work:

sudo dvd+rw-format -force /dev/cdrw
sudo dvd+rw-format -lead-out /dev/cdrw
