i've experienced the same problem with #
$ less \#ubuntu-<tab><tab>
#ubuntu-motu #ubuntu-server
$ less \#ubuntu-m<tab> <--- nothing happens

I think the problem is that bash-completion isn't reading escaped characters correctly.
