As Julien said, thanks for the patch. My opinion is that it is way too invasive as it currently stands to be committed to trunk. However, I would like Neil to look over how the monitor code has been changed, and incorporate it into the rewrite (when he has some time, of course).

When I have some more time, I'll go over some of the smaller things that the patch covers, such as build system fixes and deprecated API.
