You could use, e.g., gnome-alsamixer.

Sure, I understand the pain. No one wins. I suggest smacking Creative
with a trout.

Do you mean IEC958 or IEC958 Optical Raw? They are very (i.e.,
significantly) different mixer elements with very (i.e.,
significantly) different semantics.
