I have this problem also, I am on a MacBook Pro late 2011 model running 10.8.1 Lion with 4GB RAM and 1 2.2GHz Intel Core i5 dualcore.

This affects me in 1.3, and it is kind of crucial that the text feature gets a fix. I need to use it a lot, and it's sort of confusing in the GIMP.
